About Us
Located at Thornton Township High School, in Harvey, IL, T.U.F. teaches students basic agricultural skills in order to ensure democratic access to healthy food choices. In many communities, like ours, there are many more unhealthy food options than healthy ones. Many students grow up believing that food comes from a drive- thru or from a box. It is T.U.F.'s goal to introduce students, staff and community to the power of healing a community via small scale agriculture. With the power of a seed, community gardeners can band together to eliminate obesity, diabetes, heart disease and other diet related diseases. With the power of a seed, community gardeners can alleviate hunger and foster community unity. As a part of the students' agriculture education, students will be saving seeds from their harvest to give to the community. We operate under an assumption that, together, our community can solve many of its own problems. Imagine if we could encourage community gardening and encourage the community to grow extra food to share with those in need, either directly or through community food banks. Everyone can affect change. If you are reading this, consider how you could grow food and share food. Consider how you might be able to persuade others to do the same.
