Garlic is a very easy plant to grow. This is perfect for beginners. There are many types of garlic that vary in their strength, but they all fit into two main groups- Hard neck and Soft neck. Most garlics in the store are soft necks. Elephant garlic is not really garlic, but has a mild garlic taste and is great for roasting.
Planting: you can obtain seed garlic online or you can plant organic garlic bought from your local grocery store. Non-organic garlic has been sprayed with a chemical growth inhibitor. Take the garlic bulb and seperate the cloves just before planting. Remove paper skin of the bulb, but not the paper skin of the clove. Plant clove blunt side down, 3" into the soil. Cloves should be planted 6" apart. Rows should be 12" apart. Garlic is a bulb, so planting should be done a few weeks before the first frost of winter. Harvest garlic when a few leaves begin to die back. This will happen in July for our area.
SEED GARLIC WILL BE AVAILABLE IN NOV.
